Tone Deaf Vet – a musical journey

Welcome to Tone Deaf Vet – a musical journey. This page has 6 musical studies as my first virtual EP; that being 5 covers and one original beat poem.

Please note that this page is a journey and not about financial gain; contributors to any work are appropriately noted any errors or omissions are accidental and will be corrected as they become known. Also note that this content may contain triggers for some people.

Track one – Fortunate Son, originally by Credence Clearwater Revival. Performed by the Tone Deaf Vet. Produced and recorded by Mathias at Wells Garden Studio – Ngunnawal Country,  Canberra, Australia. This track is chosen as it discusses the great leveller of the draft and the choices to embark on a military career…

Track two – Enola Gay, originally by Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark. Performed by the Tone Deaf Vet. Produced and recorded by Mathias at Wells Garden Studio – Ngunnawal Country,  Canberra, Australia. Whilst a classic disco anthem has some of the most powerful lyrics…

Track three – Brothers in Arms, originally by Dire Straits. Performed by the Tone Deaf Vet. Produced and recorded by Mathias at Wells Garden Studio – Ngunnawal Country,  Canberra, Australia. I listened to this song as a kid and never imagined that the song would take on a meaning and weave into the fabric of my being…

Track four – When September Ends, originally by Green Day. Performed by the Tone Deaf Vet. Produced and recorded by Mathias at Wells Garden Studio – Ngunnawal Country,  Canberra, Australia. I think I fell inlove with this song more for the video they produced, but none the less an amazing document of the changes in my career over these events…

Track five – Stupid Boy Mashup, originally by Keith Urban. Performed by the Tone Deaf Vet featuring Jarrad. Produced and recorded by Mathias at Wells Garden Studio – Ngunnawal Country,  Canberra, Australia. The inclusion of this song is more about the artist, his music was the sound track to much of my deployed time. I met him and discussed this and he really cared to listen to this story. As for how this track went in the studio, Jarrad was exercising tough love, taking my lyrics and notes from me in this session and just making me feel the music and tell a story. It is one of the most significant events in my performance career and I am blessed that is was captured on tape…

Track six – Life in Boxes, Written and performed by the Tone Deaf Vet. Produced and recorded by Mathias at Wells Garden Studio – Ngunnawal Country,  Canberra, Australia. The text for the beat poem is supplied and was developed as my final stage monologue for the Australian Defence Force sponsored Arts for Recovery, Resilience, Teamwork and Skills showcase (ARRTS).

I keep a photo in my wallet, my wallet is inside my bum bag, inside my back pack. The pack stays in my cupboard at night, safe from view. Next to the cupboard in my study are shelves. Stories in books, books in boxes, boxes in rows, CD’s in cases in marching order, lined up along the wall.  My guitars are in cases, some in a rack, keyboards on stands, notes in octaves, rhythm sticks in canisters guitar picks in tins, tins of biscuits, old and rare in a shelf behind glass, conversation gone, tea cold, memories stale. A tub of toys, a quiver of arrows, a bunch of car keys, an esky of beers, a cellar of wine, a strip of pills, a roll of tape, a row of sockets, a forest of trees, a set of knives. A choice of careers, an obsessive compulsive disorder, seeking order, rewarded by promotions, a team of players. A cry for help, a series of failures, a distance of success. A shed of darkness, cold, stale, dusty; Boxes, filled, emptied, stacked, ordered, stories without light, without voice. I hold my life in boxes, spices in Tupperware, sealed for freshness in failures, afraid to use them, afraid to smell defeat again…

That’s all from me for now, take care, hug your loved ones and be kind to yourselves…
